Came across this cafe while walking through Georgetown and so glad to have found it! I got the iced calm bean latte and was pleasantly surprised to taste distinct and fragrant notes of vanilla and lavender in my latte. It was one of the best iced lattes I ever had! The barista is really nice and waited patiently for me to check out the menu and gave some recommendations when I asked. Pretty spacious cafe, there’s some seats and tables for a quick break.

I have lived in and around the DMV area since I was fourteen years old. When I was young I would sit in a coffee shop and read books at the edge of the water in Alexandria, I have since moved to Rockville and that hasn’t changed, wherever I go, what ever place in the DMV I’m at, reading, relaxing, hanging, have happened in coffee shops/cafes. Forgive the lengthy post, but it is a rare opportunity for me to speak about this topic and not drive anyone listening into a deep sleep for which they require a constant in take of coffee to endure my lecture...I was once a barista, and during that time I gained a great appreciation for the job, it is a lot of work, hard work but good work. A good coffee shop is decided by the synergy of the team in the shop, a of confidence in the person next to do there job can help you do your own job better. That effect is infectious and can permeate the atmosphere of a cafe and that is where the magic happens...you see a cafe can become more then just a place where you go to get coffee and something to eat, that becomes the pretense for meeting a friend. Sometimes it’s spontaneous, sometimes it’s planed, but the coffee shop becomes the vector for the age old practice of people meeting up with one another and bonding with good food and drink. Think of it like gathering around a camp fire roasting marshmallows with hot chocolate. Except that we don’t have the opportunity to out camping in the woods all time with our friends and family, or very much woods to do so. The development of urbanization has a strange phenomenon of sometimes running counter to human nature. We are split apart in the city, pulled out job/lives in different directions seven days a week, and something has been lost. The sense of community, and connection to your friends and neighbors is illy facilitated by the style of modern life. So when a cafe opens up it can provide that functional third space where the connections between people that people need is given the time and space to develop. If you have read through this far, thank you for enduring my ramblings. If you will indulge me further...Coffee Republic has, in my opinion, has cultivated an atmosphere that gives it the sense of a true third place. It’s the little things that are difficult to reproduce artificially that give it that charm. The sense of team work with the baristas, the ideal chatter between patrons, the mood setting decor, the ambient music in the background, the friendly and personable service from the staff, it’s a mixture of all of it that Coffee Republic has accomplished in at least two of its locations. Recall that I love to sit in the tranquil state of rest with book in my lap and a good cup of warm coffee near at hand-Coffee Republic allows me to effortlessly slip into that comfortable feeling. I have spent literally an entire day with coffee and books, something that happens whenever I am in the right environment, difficult to come by in any other place in a city. I would recommend Coffee Republic to those who want a local place to meet with friends and neighbors, a place to sit and talk, to laugh and unwind, a place to be solitary with out being alone. For people like me, it is certainly a place to get lost in a good book only realize you’ve been there all day when they tell you they’re closing for the evening. The picture below is mark of an artist, not sure how they do it, but it does elevate making coffee into an art form.
